We’re now up in the mountains of Montenegro (Zabliak) right now as we didn’t quite get enough cold and damp yet! We were hoping to climb Durmitor (tallest mountain in Montenegro) but it’s covered in clouds and a fair bit of snow from what we could see today on our way in (although what we have seen so far is very picturesque. Our plan is to stay up here for three days (we have our own pretty little chalet with a wood burning stove so we’re going to enjoy some less hectic time for a change.
We drove up today from Dubrovnik (about 5 hours) so got to see about half of the bay of Kotor but unfortunately we lost the good weather at the Croatia / Montenegro border. After some hiking and canyoning here, we’ll head back to the coast and the warm(er) weather to Petrograd/Budva and then a few days around Kotor before going back into Croatia and working our way back up the coast slowly (with a day at Mostar in Bosnia).
Our first impression of Montenegro is that it will equal or surpass Croatia for natural beauty but is more like Romania in that it is FAR cheaper, less crowded and the infrastructure is still lacking. The people here don’t smile much either but our friendly hosts did just recommend us to go to one of the best meals of our trip at a local family restaurant. We ordered the “Klassic” which consisted of a big salad each of tomatoes and cucumbers on cabbage, a HUGE bowl of the best vegetable soup we’ve ever had, a 4x9 inch casserole bowl with about 2 pounds of (lamb for Jen)/(Veal for me) piled and cooked on top of roasted potatoes- OH MY.... SO TENDER AND TASTY! Then if that wasn’t enough, they finished off that with a nice piece of local cake drizzled with chocolate. Jen had a glass of wine and I had a half litre of draught beer. The cost for the two together was €20 ($30 CAD) including taxes and tip. We both said we know where we are eating tomorrow!
Sorry not many pictures of Montenegro yet because the weather wasn’t really cooperating once we got there.

Dubrovnik from up as high as you can go (drove up as the cable car was busted and neither of us felt like spending 30 Euros each anyway!) — at Dubrovnik - Old Town.

It's a lot higher (and steeper) than it looks here but this is looking southwest towards Sicily. — in Dubrovnik, Croatia. |

This is where we spent yesterday (Cavtat). Beautiful little town with a great point to walk around (running off to the right of the photo) and also where boats have to clear customs into Croatia from the south... :-) — in Cavtat. |

Any guesses to what kind of a flower this is? (You wouldn't want them in your back yard). — in Cavtat. |
